The rise and fall of Les Girondins
Mar201219

By Sam Crocker

It wasn’t too long ago that Ligue 1 was once a place of immense predictability, with Olympique Lyonnais continually picking up the winners medals at the end of the season. Each year increasing their dominance, scouring the league and picking up any stand-out talent the league possessed.  As we now know this was not an eternal dynasty for the L’OL, as guess who came along to break their grasp on trophy? Enter, FC Girondins de Bordeaux.

Mancini watches the Eden Hazard Show
Mar201218

by Jeff Cumpson

Sunday’s most competitive match in terms of the Ligue 1 table was contested in Brittany, as Toulouse visited Rennes. The clubs were tied on 44 points, with the hosts in the fifth spot on goal-differential. A win for either side could see them in a Champions League place and in the top-four by Sunday night.

Fittingly, the teams were fairly equal in terms of possession and attack, and the difference in the game came from a bizarre own-goal. Just before halftime, Rennes captain Romain Danze misjudged the danger of Toulouse’s Emmanuel Riviere’s weak shot, and instead of letting his keeper Benoit Costil make what would have been a comfortable save, he hooked his clearance badly and the ball looped over a stranded Costil and into the net. For TFC, who host Auxerre next Sunday, it was the fifth match in five without a loss, and they moved into fourth place. Rennes fell to seventh place, ahead of a Coupe de France quarterfinal at Valenciennes on Wednesday.

Late Gomis goal seals Lyon derby win
Mar201218

Let Dominic Conquest lead you through Saturday’s Ligue 1 action

Saint-Etienne 0 Lyon 1

This was one of the most important meetings between the two clubs in many seasons – with Les Verts looking to get their first win against Olympique Lyonnais at home for the first time since 1994 while also looking to qualify for Europe at their bitter rival’s expense. However, Saint-Etienne were disappointing and a 0-1 defeat means that Lyon snatch 4th place spot on goal difference.

Lyon were top throughout, and perhaps should have had an opportunity to go ahead just before halftime when Aubameyang tackled Michel Bastos poorly, but the referee felt that it was a fair challenge.

Lyon got an excellent goal late on from ex-Saint-Etienne striker, Bafétimbi Gomis. Pure route one stuff, Lloris clears the ball upfield which the powerful Lyon and France striker was able to win and strike beautifully into the top left corner past a helpless Stephane Ruffier.

Video Friday: Yohan Mollo shows his skills
Mar201216

Bonjour!

I hope everyone is well and looking forward to the Ligue 1 action this weekend.

It’s been a frustration for us at French Football Weekly that we have not been able to bring more video content.

Videos that we make get rejected for copyright issues. And the lack of proper videos for Ligue 1 content is a bit of a joke.

What I am going to do is on a Friday try and bring you the best videos from around Ligue 1, Ligue 2 or the cup competitions and get you in the football mood.

This week we’ve got AS Nancy’s Yohan Mollo showing off his best in-game moves. Then you can watch Bastia extend their lead at the top of Ligue 2 as they win 3-1 at Lens. And finally with the nothern derby between Lille and Valenciennes ending the weekend’s action why not relive the cup game from January when Valenciennes stunned the holders and knocked them out of the Coupe de France/

Enjoy.

Ribery hits top gear as Bayern hit seven
Mar201214

by Gary Linton

Hello and once again welcome back to the one stop shop for all your Frenchmen abroad information. This week we will be diving into England, Germany and of course Spain, sit back get a drink, and enjoy.

First stop this weekend is, in fact it has to be Germany and the Allianz Arena, you’ll know the player already, he’s not shy to the Frenchmen abroad part of the site here at French Football Weekly, it’s none other than arguably the most on fire Frenchmen out there, Franck Ribéry. At the weekend Bayern Munich were up against mid-table side Hoffenheim and the star of the show was Ribery. In the ninety minutes he not only helped his side to ‘just’ another three points, but he put in a performance that was simply exceptional. Scoring just once, the last of the seven goals they scored, he also helped out and assisted another three goals, contributing to four goals, in the 7-1 win. Just another day at the office for Ribery.

Nancy looking to avoid the drop
Mar201212

Rhys Clarkson gives us his opinion on Nancy’s fight against relegation this season.  You can follow him on Twitter here.

After Saturday’s 1-1 draw away to OGC Nice, Nancy sit 17th in Ligue 1 with 27pts from 27 games, only out of the relegation zone on goal difference. The game at the Stade du Ray was a chance for both teams to lift themselves from the foot of the league to the relative safety of mid table. After Nancy took all 3 points from last weekends game against Lyon and Nice triumphed over Bordeaux, confidence was running high as the two teams looked to continue their run with another win to put some distance between themselves and the bottom three.

Leading scorer Daniel Niculae fired Nancy into the lead early in the first half to put the away side 1-0 up, and it took 24 minutes for the hosts to find a reply, but they did just that in the form of Franck Dja Djedje, who hit the back of the net just past the half hour mark, to get his team back in the game before half time. The second half saw few chances created, both teams looked comfortable on the ball but lacked any real quality in the final third.

Ligue 2: Bet of the day
Mar201212

What a debut for resident betting expert Mark Tonks. He called Lyon v Lille, both teams to score. He then predicted the PSG and Montpellier double. I hope you all took his advice. To round up his betting debut weekend, he is going for the hat-trick.

Hope you all enjoyed the weekend’s games, the Monday night Ligue 2 match is a tricky one to predict. Lens vs Bastia

However there are some things that stand out, the first is looking at how tight Ligue 2 is, 15 points separate the top 13 teams, compare that to the Ligue 1 where 29 points separate the top 13 teams, my point being that Ligue 2 is extremely tight this season and anything could happen here. The pointers are towards Lens upsetting the promotion favourites, Bastia haven’t beaten Lens at the Stade Felix Bollaert since the seventies. You’ll start to realise that i love a good stat like that.

Lens also boast a home record of just two defeats in the last 15 games, I’m not saying Lens are going to win, I just think that Bastia are going to struggle as there away form isn’t that solid. They have lost as many as they have won on there travels this season.

A nice bet here is the draw no bet option (you get your money back if it is a draw)

Back Lens at draw no bet at odds of 1.91 @bet365

Good luck!
