United Keeping Tabs On Celtic’s Dembele
Ever since young French striker Moussa Dembele arrived at Celtic Park from English Championship side Fulham, he has looked every bit a star, scoring eighteen goals for his new club to date. The 20-year-old took his tally for the French Under-21 side to four goals from four games recently, finding the back of the net twice in a 3-2 victory over England. His form so far this season has unsurprisingly attracted attention from elsewhere, with Jose Mourinho reportedly keen to bring the youngster to Old Trafford. However, despite such interest, the football odds show it highly unlikely that Dembele will leave the Scottish champions in January.
Dembele burst onto the scene with two goals against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the Champions League back in September, and with seven Premiership goals to his name so far this season, it is little surprise that bookmakers Coral make him odds on in the football odds to win the golden boot award come the end of the campaign. In fact, the latest football odds show the youngster as the favourite to find the back of the net in Celtic’s crucial Champions League encounter with Spanish giants Barcelona.
Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers believes that when Dembele does eventually depart from Celtic Park, that it will be for a Scottish record fee. The sale of Victor Wanyama to Southampton for £12.5 million is currently leading the way, and with Celtic having paid just £500,000 for Dembele, any such deal would be a major return on their investment. However, despite the former PSG youth player being linked with a move, former Liverpool manager Rodgers is understandably keen for his star man to stay.
With their struggles in front of goal so far this season, and with Zlatan Ibrahimovic showing signs of his growing years over recent years, Mourinho is understood to be in the market for a striker, with Dembele just one of a number of potential candidates. Although United head the football odds with Coral to eventually sign the Frenchman, they could well be made to wait until the end of the season to get their man. Dembele had previously been on the verge of signing for United’s Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, only for an injury to scupper such a deal. With Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger also reportedly a fan of his compatriot, a bidding war for the goal scorer could well develop over the next twelve months.
