Marseille keep the pressure on Lille
Before Lille or Paris St Germain could concentrate on this weekend’s Coupe de France both teams had to take on midweek opposition. PSG played host to Nancy and Lille travelled to the Stade Geoffrey-Guichard looking for only their fourth all time win in St-Etienne.
Mevlut Erding gave PSG an early lead but Anthony Kombouare’s side couldn’t go on the win the game, an equaliser in the 69th minute from Youssef Hadji won Nancy a valuable away point and gives them hope of survival.
Lille gave themselves a huge boost before the cup final, coming from behind to beat St-Etienne, Rio Mavuba with the decisive strike, only his third ever goal and he couldn’t have picked a better time to find the net. Michael Landreau saved a Bakary Sako penalty in the first half to keep the scores level and Mavuba’s strike gave Les Dogues all three points and for at least 24 hours they would have seven point lead over Marseille.
Brest travelled to the Stade Velodrome with the eyes from the north looking down for a possible upset. Never having beaten Marseille away from home it wasn’t looking good for Stade Brestois. After 12 minutes Marseille made the breakthrough with Loic Remy’s goal, in the second half Jordan Ayew and Gabriel Heinze added two more and kept the pressure on Lille at the top.
Down at the bottom it was Auxerre that moved themselves into safety with a tremendous 4-0 win over Lyon. It was the first time since 1996 they had scored as many goals against Les Gones in a league fixture.
Dennis Oliech, Cedric Hengbart and an Alain Traore double were enough to officially kill any hopes of Lyon’s title chances and it would take a miracle to catch Marseille into second place. The win moves Auxerre up into six and leaves them six points from the drop.
Elsewhere in the league Sochaux beat Monaco 3-0, it’s their third win in a row, apart from league leaders Lille they are the form side in Ligue 1. David Sauget, Mobido Maiga and Ryad Boudebouz with the goals. Francis Gillot’s men look strong contenders for a Europa League place now, sitting in 6th place with a four point gap over Lorient in 7th. The defeat sees Monaco sit precariously over the drop zone, only one point above Nancy, their fate will go down to the wire.
In was a bad day for Lorient, their 3-1 defeat at Montpellier sees them possibly just out range for the 6th place. The third goal from Jamel Saihi stopped any thoughts of a Lorient comeback and was also the 800th goal Montpellier has scored in Ligue 1.
The league action will take a short break on Saturday as Lille and PSG meet in the Stade de France for the Coupe de France final. It will hopefully be a close and entertaining match.
The Ligue 1 action gets under way on Sunday and if Marseille don’t become the first team in 17 attempts to collect all three points at Lorient then Lille would have the chance to go six points clear with two games to when they take on Sochaux on Wednesday night.
It is going to be another massive few days in this seasons pulsating Ligue 1 campaign.
