A revolution in football?

To improve the spectacle, Gary Neville suggests introducing penalty shootouts after draws in league matches.

It’s an idea worth exploring. In a segment hosted by Sky Bet, four English football legends, Ian Wright, Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher and Roy Keane, former Premier League stars and now consultants, discussed how their favourite sport could be improved.

Gary Neville made a proposal. “At the end of the league matches, in the event of a draw, we could organise a penalty shoot-out to award an extra point, explains the former Manchester United full-back. The winner of the session would earn two points, and one point for the loser.

From a sporting perspective, it is questionable whether it would create more of a spectacle. That is not certain, as some teams could spend their time defending and come away with two points. But Gary Neville thinks the spectators would appreciate it.

“If a kid comes to see a game for the first time, or comes to see his only game of the season, even if he sees a 0-0 or a 1-1, there can still be a winner in that game”pleads the former Red Devil. Convincing?
