Coming on in the second half to replace Pedro Neto, the Portuguese forward sealed the victory for his team thanks to an assist from Nuno Mendes. Although these two goals from the Seleção star were crucial, coach Roberto Martinez refuses to talk about any dependency on CR7.
“He’s an incredible player, but…”
“Cristiano is in a good moment. It’s September, he’s already played four games and scored for his club. We have to protect all the players. Cristiano can’t play two 90-minute games. He had to be there to finish, not to start the game. I liked his commitment,” the Spanish coach explained to RTP3.
As for the idea of dependency, he clarified: “Dependency? He’s an incredible player. But there is no dependency. He’s an asset. He’s very important in front of goal. His intelligence in opening up spaces is important.”
