The stars were in the spotlight on Sunday evening. For the second day of the Nations League group stage, Croatia was able to count on Luka Modric to dispose of Poland (1-0), while Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winning goal for Portugal against Scotland (2-1). As for Spain, they were a hit in Switzerland, despite being down for more than an hour (1-4).
In League A, everything went well for the favourites. Or at least they all won. Against Robert Lewandowski’s Poland, Croatia dominated. While the visitors lacked efficiency, the locals were just as clumsy, until Luka Modric came out of his box to score the only goal of the game, synonymous with Croatia’s victory (1-0, 52nd). An important victory, especially since at the same time, the other favourite in Group 1 won.
Ronaldo comes off the bench… and out of his box
Portugal have indeed won their second game in a row, a few days after beating Croatia (2-1). This time, it was against Scotland that the Portuguese won. It was however complicated since they were behind for a good while after Scott McTominay’s goal (7th). Substitute at kick-off, Cristiano Ronaldo came on at half-time and participated in turning the situation around in his team’s favour. After Bruno Fernandes’ equaliser (1-1, 45th), CR7 gave Portugal the victory with his 901st career goal (2-1).
At the same time, Spain showed off their collective talent against Switzerland. After Joselu’s quick opener (4th), Fabian Ruiz doubled Spain’s lead (13th) before Robin Le Normand was sent off (20th). The opportunity for Mohamed Amdouni to reduce the gap (1-2, 41st). And yet, the Red found a way to get back on track and Fabian Ruiz scored twice (1-3, 77th) before Ferran Torres scored his own goal (1-4, 80th). The last of this crazy match. In the Group 4 standings, Spain is second, two points behind Denmark who won earlier in the day, at home, against Serbia (2-0).
