The latest news on Lionel Messi, who has missed 11 games for Inter Miami, suggests he could return from injury by the end of August.

The Herons released their talismanic captain for the Copa America in mid-June, only to see him injure his right ankle in the final of that competition as Argentina successfully defended their continental crown on American soil.

Inter Miami have won eight games without Messi, but have also exited the Leagues Cup. No date has been set for the 37-year-old’s return. AS reports, however, that the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is undergoing individual training sessions.

His fitness is assessed daily, with no risk to be taken. The ligaments in his ankle need time to fully recover, with Inter Miami keen to avoid any setbacks. This means Messi will not be rushed to return.

Tata Martino’s side will be back in action against Supporters’ Shield rivals FC Cincinnati on August 24. Messi may not be in that game, but he could be back in contention “by the end of the month”, according to AS. That would still give him plenty of time to contribute to the quest for ultimate MLS Cup glory.
