After being handed the armband by Reece James in the pre-season friendly against Real Madrid, Enzo Fernandez could become Chelsea’s vice-captain from the coming campaign.
New Blues manager Enzo Maresca is set to name the Argentine midfielder as vice-captain despite his involvement in Argentina’s racism scandal which has seriously tarnished the player’s image.
Chelsea do not want to overwhelm Fernandez
Videos have emerged of Argentina players singing a racist and homophobic song after their Copa America win last month and Fernandez was the one at the forefront.
Although he has apologised for the incident, Fernandez is under investigation by FIFA. But Chelsea are keen to move on quickly. Maresca believes the matter is closed for many Chelsea players.
“He is one of the most important players, justified the Italian technician. To be honest, I think when we replaced Reece, he gave the armband to Enzo and that shows how much respect Enzo has within the team. I think that’s very clear.”
If he becomes vice-captain, Fernandez will be a bit of a boss in the dressing room. It would be a rather curious situation since several of his teammates continue to think that an investigation should be conducted internally and that the player should be punished.
