After long negotiations and the distrust of some supporters, Mason Greenwood finally joined Olympique de Marseille during the summer. The Marseille club was not the only one on the file and had to get ahead of several teams interested in the profile of the former Manchester United outcast. Among them, Lazio Rome, who were quite ready to welcome the English international despite his past.
Angelo Fabiani, the sporting director of the Roman team, explained why it didn’t happen with Greenwood. And the words used don’t paint a very positive picture of the new OM player…
“We offered around 26 million euros. He preferred to choose another club. In my opinion, the best deals are the ones you don’t do. I want players who love the club they are in. I don’t want mercenaries. (…) I have values that my parents passed on to me. Mason Greenwood has chosen another path and we wish him good luck,” explained the Italian leader in an interview with Lazio Style radio.
Lazio had already tried to sign Mason Greenwood last season, before he was loaned to Getafe. It is therefore understandable why the capital club no longer really wants to hear about him.
Greenwood’s first weeks with Olympique de Marseille have been discreet and studious, even if the British striker has already scored a goal in a warm-up match.
