Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said it would be “the biggest slap in the face in the history of football” if he took the job as England manager.
The German has been linked with the job since Gareth Southgate resigned after England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. However, the German, who left Liverpool at the end of last season saying he had “run out of energy”, is not interested.
Klopp does not want to relapse
During his nine years with the Reds he won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.
At the International Coaches Congress in Wurzburg, Germany, Klopp was asked if there were any offers on the table. “At the moment there is nothing in terms of employment. No club, no country, he replied. England? I would lose face like no one else in the history of football has ever done if I said I would make an exception for you.”. A word to the wise is enough.
Along with Klopp, England Under-21 manager Lee Carsley has been tipped for the job, as have former Chelsea and Brighton manager Graham Potter and Thomas Tuchel, who most recently managed Bayern Munich.
England’s first game after Southgate’s departure will be against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on September 7 in the UEFA Nations League.
