Real Madrid, it’s the revolution

Real Madrid are set to lock down two key players from last season’s La Liga and Champions League double with just one year remaining on the contracts of Dani Carvajal and Ferland Mendy.

The former will be handed a one-year extension due to the club’s policy of only extending contracts for one season for players over the age of 30. The 32-year-old is content with that, but Los Blancos believe he has a bright future ahead of him, and it has even been suggested that a tacit agreement has been reached for his new deal to last longer.

This is where Mendy’s case differs, according to Diario AS. The fact that Alphonso Davies is set to arrive in Spain next summer and will remain at Bayern Munich next season argues in favour of a new arrangement. At 29, he can be renewed for a longer term, and while reports indicate that a deal is almost done, they say the length of the contract will depend in part on his intentions for the future.

Two contracts or nothing

Mendy has previously turned down an offer from Saudi Arabia and, after doubts over his continuity last summer, is now seen as a central part of Carlo Ancelotti’s squad. The Italian believes the Frenchman is a key player. However, Mendy is aware that Davies is set to return next season and may want to give himself an exit.
