Two venues. Two atmospheres. Two triumphs that turned into controversy. In recent hours, the world of football has vibrated to the rhythm of the exploits of two great nations, Spain and Argentina. Crowned European champion for the fourth time in its history, La Roja has won unanimous praise for its quality of play during Euro 2024.
For its part, theArgentina
won its third consecutive major tournament by securing a new Copa America, a few hours later, across the Atlantic. It was time to celebrate, on every continent, but the celebrations were tarnished by distressing images.
Enzo Fernandez, the filthy act
The most serious incidents took place in the Argentinian ranks, where drunkenness once again gave way to indignation. Several Albiceleste players, including Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, took up racist chants that targeted French players of African origin. The video, released by Fernandez, has caused a heated controversy and is expected to be the subject of legal proceedings.
Less brutal but just as much commented on: the image of Dani Carvajal refusing to meet Pedro Sanchez’s gaze before shaking his hand very curtly. This statesman belongs to a left-wing government. However, the Real Madrid full-back is known for his ideas close to the Spanish far right. In the sweet euphoria of victory, Spain could have done without this controversy.
