Toni Kroos has admitted he is devastated after the final defeat of his career at Euro 2024.

The veteran midfielder confirmed ahead of the tournament that he would retire this summer. After opting not to renew his contract with Real Madrid, Kroos’ return to Germany was a fairytale, as he hoped to leave the competition with an international title.

Kroos played a key role for the hosts after being brought back into the national team at the start of 2024. However, despite leading Spain to extra time in the quarter-finals, Kroos’ side were eliminated by Mikel Merino’s late goal in Stuttgart.

Kroos will spend time with his family

It was with emotion that Kroos confirmed that he would be taking a break before deciding on the rest of his career. “We had a great common goal. That dream is now shattered” Kroos said according to Marca.
“We will realize in the next few days that we had a good tournament, but now it is very bitter. “We gave everything to avoid defeat. We can be proud because we have given hope to German football.”

Kroos has not indicated he would seek a coaching role as he wants to use his retirement to spend time with his family. Spain will face France in the semi-finals on July 9 in Munich, with the other semi-final still to be determined.
