Borussia Dortmund announced their new sponsor, Rheinmetall, this week. A partnership like no other, because Rheinmetall is a weapons manufacturer (tanks, shells). BVB supporters were offended by this three-year sponsorship which will notably see the company logo on the players’ jerseys. Hans-Joachim Watzke, the president of Dortmund, wanted to defend this partnership.
“We have war in Europe for the first time in many decades. The majority of Germans welcome the fact that the Bundeswehr is being modernized to guarantee freedom and democracy. Likewise, a clear majority of people want us to support Ukraine, which is suffering from Russia’s war of aggression. But both only work with modern defense technology. What would Ukraine be today without the weapons of the United States and Europe? Security and defense are the cornerstones of our democracy”justified Hans-Joachim Watzke.
