Real Madrid right-back Lucas Vazquez did not appreciate Spanish coach Luis de la Fuente’s decision to leave him out of La Roja’s preliminary list for Euro 2024.

De la Fuente has drawn up a list of 29 players, including colleagues Nacho Fernandez, Joselu Mato and Dani Carvajal.

Right after the announcement, Vazquez tweeted two laughing faces, but a few minutes later he deleted that message from his account. This did not prevent him from being captured. His Real Madrid teammate Carvajal is expected to start, while Sevilla FC captain Jesus Navas appears to be his replacement. Nacho and Marcos Llorente could also replace him if needed.

Navas, 38, will play his final international tournament with Spain and de la Fuente said he was “born to play at international level” and that he had “never disappointed” when asked about his selection. Vazquez had a good season when called upon in Carvajal’s absence, even if he was exposed against Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Navas hasn’t had his best season this year, but has been consistent as always, and brings a wealth of leadership and experience to his role.

Since the tweet was deleted, Vazquez, while on duty at Real Madrid and attending the media day for the Champions League final, has denied that he had anything to do with the national team and said he would give him his full support, although he decided not to explain what he was making fun of.
