FC Barcelona and Real Madrid top the list of Spanish clubs to receive compensation from FIFA following the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Each club must receive compensation from FIFA for the use of its players during the World Cup, which amounts to just under 10,000 euros per day per player. In total, FIFA paid 142.7 million euros in compensation to clubs around the world.
English clubs received the most compensation with €33.87 million, while Spain came second with a total of €21.74 million paid to Spanish clubs. Manchester City received the most compensation, ie 4.13 million euros, just ahead of FC Barcelona (4.08 million euros). Real Madrid received 3.45 million euros.
Fifa very generous
Atlético de Madrid and Sevilla FC received 2.9 and 2.41 million euros respectively, while Villarreal, Valencia and Real Betis all passed the million euro mark.
FC Barcelona have sent 17 players to the World Cup, more than anyone else, although City’s players have clearly lasted longer. While that amount may seem paltry compared to the multimillion-euro transfers made by most of these clubs, it could represent a good chunk of a player’s salary for a season. And god knows that Barça needs it…
