With a stellar career between Salzburg, Leipzig and Liverpool, Naby Keita chose to return to Germany last summer. Swapping the red of the Reds for the green of Werder Bremen, this choice was surprising but the Guinean midfielder was surely keen to find an important role in a squad. And unfortunately for the 29-year-old, it didn’t go as planned. Having only played five games with the current twelfth in the Bundesliga, Keita is often injured. Worse still, he would have been guilty of a gesture of humor this Sunday before the match against Bayer Leverkusen.

Indeed, learning of his placement on the bench against the German champion, the latter decided not to play the match. Clemens Fritz, sporting director of the German club, announced before the match that sanctions will be taken against the native of Conakry: “after learning yesterday that Naby would not play from the start, he decided not to get on the bus but to return home. We will speak tomorrow with him and his advisor about the consequences and the course of events.» In other words, it doesn’t smell good for anyone who passed through Istres.
