We can’t say we didn’t see it coming. Having gone it alone up and down this season in the Bundesliga, Bayer Leverkusen logically won the first German championship title in its history this Sunday (5-0 victory against Werder). A historic performance, which could also result in two other coronations in the weeks to come: in the Europa League and the German Cup.
Whatever happens and whatever the end of the season has in store for them, it was bound to be time for celebrations this afternoon for Alonso’s players. After communing with their supporters for almost an hour on the lawn of the Bay Arena, the new German champions also went to their joy in the locker room. Xabi Alonso notably had the right to the traditional shower of beer during his press conference, when Jérémie Frimpong seemed well touched too. Happiness.
