Iga Swiatek is accused of having “betrayed” Robert Lewandowski during Sunday’s Clasico between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona at the Bernabeu.
Los Blancos’ 3-2 victory caused dissension across Spain due to the controversial nature of the success. FC Barcelona were outraged when a Lamine Yamal shot appeared to cross the line, but no goal was awarded to the Catalans. Instead, they lost to a Jude Bellingham goal in the final seconds of the match for the second Clasico of the La Liga season.
Among the disappointed Barca players was Robert Lewandowski, who started the match in the center forward role for the visiting team. He could have counted on the support of tennis sensation Iga Swiatek, WTA world number 1, from the stands, but she revealed that she supported the Whites.
A real betrayal
On her X account, she said: “Thank you very much for this experience. #HalaMadrid”. Mundo Deportivo called his decision a betrayal. Lewandowski, after all, traveled to Paris to watch her compatriot compete in the 2022 French Open final and embraced her after her 6-1, 6-3 victory over Coco Gauff.
“I didn’t know it and I’m happy because I would have been very stressed,” Swiatek declared during the press conference following his triumph. “ I’m glad he’s here, honestly. I don’t know if he’s a big tennis fan or not. But, yeah, I mean, wow! He has been a top athlete in our country for so many years and it’s hard to believe he came to see me. I hope he liked it. I hope he comes back. I do not know. I’m just overwhelmed.” This is not the first time Swiatek has visited the Bernabeu. Before last year’s Madrid Open, a tournament she will play next week, she visited the stadium during its renovation phase.
