Why Spain lost Brahim Diaz

A Spanish international since June 2021, Brahim Diaz, 24, has decided to join the selection of Morocco, his father’s country. Total incomprehension in Spain and particularly within Real Madrid.

It’s a hell of a decision that Brahim Diaz has made in recent days. At 24 years old, and while he is having a good season at Real Madrid as a luxury joker in the offensive sector (8 goals in 32 matches in all competitions), Brahim Diaz will play with the Moroccan national team. The left-handed attacking midfielder will be called up by Walid Regragui for the two Atlas Lions matches at the end of March.

Born in Malaga to an Andalusian mother and a father of Moroccan origin, Brahim Abdelkader Diaz Amda (his full name) played in U17, U19 and Spanish Espoirs, before becoming international A in June 2021, but during a friendly match for the Seleccion against Lithuania before Euro 2020. Since then, he has not been called up despite his successes with AC Milan (where he was loaned for three seasons by Casa Blanca). The problem is here.

Snubbed by Luis de la Fuente

As indicated Marca, Brahim waited until the last moment to change his sporting national and he will not be able to change a second time. While he was asked to play in the African Cup of Nations with the Moroccans, he had no contact with the Spanish federation, not being at all in Luis de la Fuente’s favor. The latter was already in charge of the Espoirs before and had not taken him for the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021.

The Moroccan federation, which approached the player and his entourage since 2018, ended up receiving a positive response, thus promising the little 1.71m dribbler to become the new star of the Moroccan selection. Total incomprehension behind the scenes at Real Madrid…

Morocco plays two friendly matches in Agadir during the next international window, against Angola and Mauritania, but will mainly continue the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup next June, against Zambia and Congo. With a new number 10.
