Luis Suarez has revealed he almost joined Real Madrid before FC Barcelona to replace then-unwanted Karim Benzema.
During an interview with DelSol, Suarez opened up about a potential move to Real Madrid which was dependent on Karim Benzema leaving to Arsenal. The legendary Barcelona striker has explained how his infamous bite on Giorgio Chiellini during the 2014 World Cup and subsequent ban deterred Los Blancos from signing him and allowed Benzema to stay at Madrid.
“The bite thing happened and Barcelona continued to want to sign me despite the sanction. I will always be grateful to him.”
Suarez to replace Benzema?
Suarez joined FC Barcelona and formed an attacking trio with Messi and Neymar that became one of the greatest attacking trios in the history of the sport. However, Madrid’s patience with Benzema eventually came to fruition and the Frenchman left the club after winning a Ballon d’Or, five Champions Leagues and four La Liga. Arsenal, for their part, signed Danny Welbeck that summer and have still not resolved an attacking problem that has plagued the Gunners for years.
Suarez recently signed for Inter Miami and reunited with Lionel Messi. If the Uruguayan had decided to join Madrid to play alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, he could have been tempted to join Al-Nassr.
