Following the coronation of Côte d’Ivoire, winner of the third CAN in its history, scenes of jubilation took place in Paris. Unfortunately, they gave way to tensions with the police.

Sunday evening, Ivory Coast won the 2023 African Cup of Nations that it was organizing (in the months of January and February 2024), by beating Nigeria in the final (2-1), in an Alassane stadium. Ouattara in full delirium. For the third star of the country, after the coronations in 1995 and 2015.

Following this coronation, many Ivorians took to the streets of Paris to celebrate their country’s victory. But the party was, in part, tarnished by excesses. On the Champs-Élysées, traffic was completely blocked by the crowds present. Tensions quickly arose. CRS and BRAVM police officers were then dispatched to the scene.

Clashes and arrests

They had to use tear gas to disperse the supporters, causing a crowd movement. Some of them were also loaded. In return, mortar fire was launched at the BRAVM police officers. Several people were arrested.

By winning this CAN 2023, Côte d’Ivoire put an end to an astonishing drought since for the first time since Egypt in 2006, the host country lifted the trophy. However, it is the 12e times in 34 editions that the organizing country has won the continental competition.
