He came close to the worst on May 28, 2023. On a pilgrimage to Andalusia, Sergio Rico decided to take time with his loved ones after winning PSG’s eleventh French championship title. Unfortunately, the victim of a serious horse riding accident, the Spanish porter was sent to Seville hospital to receive first aid. Placed in a state of absolute emergency, the days of the former Sevilla FC goalkeeper then seemed numbered. However, after a successful operation and many weeks spent at the Andalusian University Hospital, the 30-year-old guard was able to leave the hospital and resume an almost normal life without serious consequences.

And while he has still not played again with the capital club, Sergio Rico regularly talks about this traumatic episode. Questioned this Sunday on the occasion of the Channel Football Clubthe former Fulham player explained that he still owes his life to his status as a top athlete: “the truth is that I owe everything to football. Football is my whole life. A doctor explained to me that my arteries were a little more resistant than those of a normal person, who did not do as much sport. If I hadn’t been a top athlete, I might have died.” The rest of this poignant testimony will be broadcast at 7:30 p.m. in the CFC on Canal+.
