Zinédine Zidane will not be Djamel Belmadi’s successor on the Fennecs bench.
After the defeat against Mauritania (0-1), on January 22 in Bouaké, during the third day of the CAN group stage, Djamel Belmadi was ousted from his position as Algeria coach. The 47-year-old technician, who allowed the Fennecs to win the African Cup of Nations in 2019, will therefore not complete his contract which ran until December 31, 2026.
For his succession, the Algerian football federation contacted Zinédine Zidane according to The Team. Information that confirms RMC Sport. Even though he was flattered by this proposal, the former Real Madrid coach, currently free of any contract, declined it. Algerian leaders are exploring other avenues, some of which lead to Hervé Renard, Vahid Halilhodzic, Jorge Sampaoli, Julen Lopetegui and even Vladimir Petkovic.
The absolute priority for the 1998 Ballon d’Or remains to take control of the French team. “I want to come full circle with the France team. When ? It doesn’t depend on me. The French team is the best thing that has ever happened to me! It’s the pinnacle. I’m a coach, it’s firmly anchored in my head”confided the former captain of the Blues, during an interview given to The Team in June 2023.
