Former Ivory Coast international Didier Drogba spoke after Côté d’Ivoire’s failure against Equatorial Guinea in the African Cup of Nations.

Ivory Coast was humiliated by Equatorial Guinea (0-4), Monday, during the last day of the group stage of CAN 2023. This historic defeat leaves the Elephants in a delicate situation, with only three points on the meter.

Didier Drogba, the former glory of African football present in the stands of the Alassane-Ouattara stadium in Ebimpé, gave a speech full of realism to the players of the Ivorian selection. He particularly expressed his concern about how a nation like Côte d’Ivoire, as organizer of Africa’s premier competition, can experience such disillusionment.

“We will have to get back to work, not only ask ourselves the right questions, but also make the right decisions,” the former Chelsea and Olympique Marseille striker told the media. For football and only football, because today, a nation like Ivory Coast cannot organize such a competition and… Of course, it can be eliminated prematurely. But not in this way. There is a real problem. »

A tiny hope for the Ivorians

To reach the quarter-finals, Serge Aurier and his teammates must now hope for favorable results in the other groups. Indeed, the Elephants can still hope to be drafted by finishing among the four best thirds.
