Big favorite of the competition, Japan was beaten by Iraq (2-1) during the group stage of the Asian Cup.

Clearly, this start of the Asian Cup is difficult for Japan. After being knocked out by Vietnam (4-2) on the first day, the Japanese were beaten this Friday by Iraq (2-1), for their second meeting in the competition.

Iraq’s Jesus Casas Garcia made the difference in the first period, thanks to a double from Aymen Hussein (5th, 45th+4). The Japanese only reacted too late, with a goal from captain Wataru Endo (90th + 3).

With six points in two games, Iraq has a very good option for first place in the group. Japan still has its destiny in its hands for qualification, but a shock against South Korea could await Takumi Minamino’s teammates in the round of 16, in the event of second place.
