As part of a debate on the popularity of Kylian Mbappé with the general public, the case of Zinedine Zidane within France 98 was raised on the channel “L’Équipe”.
If there is one player whose public notoriety literally soared thanks to France’s success in the 1998 World Cup final, it is Zinedine Zidane. Recognized until now for his talent, the number 10 of the Blues entered the legend thanks to his two headed goals in this famous match against Brazil. Not really to his advantage until then in the competition, “Zizou” moved into another dimension and achieved star status among the general public. A status that a certain Kylian Mbappé acquired much earlier. The case of the two champions was mentioned on Wednesday on the channel The Team.
And it was more particularly their love rating with the public, but also with their teammates, that was discussed. Journalist for the specialized media, Sébastien Tarrago then spoke about Zinedine Zidane. “ Do you think Zidane is loved by the entire 98-2000 generation? », asked the latter to one of the speakers present on the set? Then miming a large space with his hands, he continued: “ I can give you a list like that, of people who can’t frame it. » As to whether this enmity was still current, the journalist concluded philosophically: “ Time passes. »
Difference with Mbappé?
Returning to the Zidane-Mbappé comparison, but this time at the level of the general public’s perception, Eric Blanc, a former rugby player who notably played for Racing, responded to Sébastien Tarrago. “ The players, the locker room, it’s something else. I’m talking about the general public. I don’t hear the same thing, or I lose my memory and become deaf. Mbappé, today I hear strange noises, a sort of pan behind, things, well… I’ll let it speak. (…) No fuss with business, noise. But Zidane, never. »
