By his own admission, the former England coach, affected by cancer, probably has less than a year to live.

Sven Goran Erikson has been fighting cancer for many months. But at 75, the former coach of Benfica, Lazio Rome, with whom he won the Cup of Cups in 1999, and England, with two quarter-finals at the World Cup, in 2002 and 2006, showed resignation, as evidenced by his comments on Swedish radio Sveriges.

“Everyone understood that I have an illness that is bad. “Everyone assumes it’s cancer and it is.” he first confided, adding: “I have to fight as long as I can. » But the disease progresses and the end seems inevitable, with the man who was still sporting director of the Swedish club Karlstad last season being pessimistic about his chances of survival.

The technician did not hesitate to specify the time he had left to live, according to his doctors. “At best maybe a year, at worst a little less or at best maybe a little longer”, he whispered, specifying: “We cannot be absolutely sure. The best thing is not to think about it.”

And the former right-back, forced to give up his playing career at just 27 years old due to a knee injury, is philosophical. “You can trick your brain a little bit, see the positive and not sink into adversity. Of course it’s the biggest battle but you have to try to get something good out of it.” he added.
