The Annecy club had asked that the next Ligue 2 championship be played at 21, the Haute-Savoie club believing that it was the direct victim of the given match won in Rodez against Bordeaux.

In an open letter addressed to the sporting and political authorities, the footballers of Annecy had asked the LFP to be able to stay in Ligue 2, even if it means having 21 clubs play a season. The team coached by Laurent Guyot ended the season with a defeat in Paris, while at the same time, and under the conditions that we know, Rodez brought back three points from Bordeaux. First relegated, the Savoyard club counted on the leniency of the League. However, his request was not heard by the LFP’s Board of Directors, which met on Wednesday, announces Etienne Moatti. The 2023-2024 Ligue 2 championship will be played with 20 clubs as planned.

Ligue 2 must increase to 18 clubs at the end of the season

On the side of the Professional Football League, we see no reason to change the regulations. Indeed, everything was done according to the rules, including the Bordeaux-Rodez match, the result of which was validated and ratified. This move to 21 clubs would have caused many upheavals, in particular by reducing the distribution of TV rights, increasing the schedule and forcing 5 clubs to go down instead of 4, with Ligue 2 going from 20 to 18 clubs at the end of next season. . For all of these reasons, the LFP did not want to consider the request of FC Annecy, which will therefore evolve into National next season, unless a Ligue 2 club is demoted by the DNCG.
