Kylian Mbappé: The Hottest Topic in French Football

Kylian Mbappé, the Parisian striker, scored two goals that led PSG to victory over Brest on Sunday (3-2). However, his on-field antics sparked intense reactions after he taunted the fans at the Stade Francis-Le Blé towards the end of the match.

Pushed to the edge by the Brest audience, Kylian Mbappé lost his cool on Sunday, October 29th. After scoring a penalty in the 88th minute, he prompted the PSG victory (3-2) over Brest, and then taunted the Brest fans by gesturing for them to be silent.

The event escalated further when he was shown a yellow card by the referee, Jérôme Brisard, and was subsequently booed by the Breton supporters as he was being replaced. During this, he again triggered the supporters by making a “3” sign with his hand, representing the number of points secured by PSG on Brest’s turf.

This behavior was not well received by Brest’s coach, Éric Roy, who expressed his dismay after the match, “I won’t mention any names, but the attitude of certain Parisians is ridiculous. They don’t need to overdo it, they won the match. When you’re a high-level player, we’ve all been through that, and sometimes we get heckled away from home. And yet, today much less than in the past. Luckily, the atmosphere here is healthy. In many stadiums, it could have turned into a catastrophe.”

In response, Kylian Mbappé, who is generally low-key on social media and not inclined to address such controversies, humorously commented on his X account (formerly Twitter), “I should have even sung with them when they insulted my teammate.”

Subsequently, the Parisian Danilo explained after the match, “He was angry because of the crowd, because of the supporters’ chants during the match.”

Luis Enrique also regretted the tense end of the match, saying, “I don’t like this type of thing. It’s bad energy. It’s better to try to enjoy the present moment.” PSG coach then downplayed the situation at the press conference saying, “I saw a bit of tension with the stands but that’s all.”

Since 2021, Mbappé’s behavior continues to stir up emotions among the fans, with some appreciating his attitude, while others criticize him for not being humble enough. Regardless, he continues to leave no French football supporter indifferent.
