Atlético de Madrid travel to Athletic Club for their final La Liga away match in 2023.
The Rojiblancos travel to the Basque Country looking to keep the pressure on their title rivals by winning in Bilbao. Last season, Diego Simeone’s side won home and away against Athletic Club, with successive 1-0 victories, with Antoine Griezmann scoring both goals on both occasions. The French international has been in impressive form since the start of the 2023/24 season, with 14 goals scored in the league and in Europe. Over the years, Griezmann has been a threat for Athletic Club, scoring 11 goals against the Basque side, including eight for Atlético Madrid and three for Real Sociedad, his former team.
Ernesto Valverde has admitted he is concerned about the Griezmann threat as Atlético travel to San Sebastian. “ Last year he scored twice against us which gave Atlético six points. He can play in attack, midfield, on the wing“, he lamented in Marca. There is no doubt that he is very talented and has done a lot of damage against us in the past. He is a player who must be controlled when he comes out of the second line because he is decisive. We know how he plays against Athletic Club.” Aside from his record against Bilbao, Griezmann is also closing in on Luis Aragones’ Colchoneros goals record (173), with the 32-year-old currently having 171.
