Bayern Munich facing the Thomas Müller puzzle

Living legend of Bayern Munich with whom he won 12 Bundesliga and 2 Champions Leagues, Thomas Müller is slowly, but surely coming to the end of his career. Aged 34, the German attacking midfielder is logically declining in performance. Already last year, he played less, although he played 40 matches for 8 goals and 12 goals. Appearing 15 times this season (2 goals and 5 goals), he has only 6 starts and an average playing time of around 38 minutes. Clearly becoming a replacement, Thomas Müller nevertheless seems to accept this situation.

Arriving at the end of his contract next June, Thomas Müller admits that he remains fulfilled with the Bavarian team. Asked by Bild a few weeks ago, he revealed that he wanted to continue the adventure for another year: “I really want to play for another year beyond 2024. At least that’s my plan. I always have fun being on the pitch, I hope that shows. (…) It’s clear that it annoys me when I’m not on the pitch. We currently have an almost oversupply of quality players up front. Everyone has to take it upon themselves sometimes.” A speech which suggests a desire to continue within the German club.

Negotiations have started, but…

And this also seems to be the case for the Bavarian management which intends to continue the collaboration with him. This is also the position that President Herbert Hainer took with Bild TV : “we are talking with him, I am also confident and I really hope that Thomas will stay with us.” After having extended Manuel Neuer (and Sven Ulreich), the Rekordmeister therefore wishes to maintain a strong Bavarian identity in his locker room and would like to continue with a major player of the club for almost 13 years. Moreover, his state of mind is regularly highlighted.

“I can only congratulate Thomas on the way he is training now, even with the small group that hasn’t played. It’s sensationally good and absolutely exemplary. I think sometimes he feels different inside, but doesn’t let it show because he’s a real team player at an extremely high level.” Thomas Tuchel recently declared at a press conference. However, if discussions only begin with Christoph Freund the sports director, nothing is done.

With a large salary, he should not suffer a reduction in this area in the event of signing a new lease, like what Manuel Neuer experienced recently. A hell of a cost for Bayern Munich for a player who is used less and less. Mentioned at Manchester United, Thomas Müller does not really fit into Thomas Tuchel’s plans. A sensitive subject between the Bavarian management and the German coach, the Thomas Müller file has continued to agitate the Bavarian environment.
