Without many starters for the last match of the first round of the League of Nations, the French women’s team won at the end against Portugal (0-1) on Tuesday. Hervé Renard’s Bleues did not shine and the Portuguese were denied a goal for non-existent offside.
Already qualified for the Final Four of the Nations League (after 4 victories and a draw), the French women’s team faced Portugal with an alternate team on Tuesday evening in Leiria. Managers Wendie Renard, Amandine Henry and Eugénie Le Sommer did not play, while Grace Geyoro, Kenza Dali and Selma Bacha only came on in the second half.
The Blues did not present a pretty face, between a lack of collective coordination and technical precision. But they won thanks to a late goal scored by Geyoro in added time (94th). The attacking trio composed of Vicki Becho, Clara Mateo and Julie Dufour did not convince at all and this reminds Hervé Renard that he does not have many offensive options beyond his two cracks Diani and Le Sommer.
Worse, the French managed to scare themselves against the bottom of the group, with a maddening lack of serenity at this level. A very bad advertisement for women’s football when the match was broadcast unencrypted (on France 4). On a huge error from Estelle Cascarino, the Portuguese scored but the assistant referee signaled an absolutely non-existent offside before the hour mark (56th). Terrible on every level…
