Last Saturday night, Senegal emerged victorious against South Sudan (4-0). This logical win allowed the Senegalese to kick off their World Cup qualifying phase perfectly. However, the Lions were left enraged by several controversial incidents during the match. Habib Diallo had a contentious goal disallowed and two penalties that could have been awarded to Lamine Camara’s teammates were not given.

The match provoked a strong reaction from Aliou Cissé, who stated after the game: “I will measure my words (…) because if I start talking about everything that happens in refereeing on the African continent, I might be suspended. Today, what is the status of the referee? How many referees are co-opted, paid, remunerated? It is all of this work that CAF must look at more deeply.” He also called on CAF to better “support” referees on the African continent.
