Newcastle take revenge on Manchester United

Four days after being robbed of a victory by the referee against PSG in the Champions League (1-1), Newcastle reacted by winning at home on Saturday evening, against Manchester United (1- 0, 14th day of the Premier League).

Newcastle needed to turn the page as quickly as possible. Last Tuesday, Eddie Howe’s men were not varnished. Traveling on the pitch of Paris Saint-Germain, as part of the fifth day of the Champions League group stage, they conceded a draw in the final moments of the game following the more than generous penalty awarded by the VAR to the Parisians (1-1). Four days later, the Magpies were determined to return to success and that is what they did at home, against Manchester United (1-0, 14th day of PL).

The locals took advantage of the sad level displayed by the Red Devils during two-thirds of the match, a far cry from what they showed on Wednesday against Galatasaray, despite the draw conceded in Turkey (3-3). And it is therefore logical that Gordon scored for his team shortly before the hour mark (1-0, 56th). Despite several changes, Erik ten Hag did not find the formula to allow the visitors to equalize, even if they believed for a few seconds that Antony had achieved it. But the former Ajax’s shot, unintentionally deflected by Maguire in an offside position, was logically canceled (89th).

Historic victory

A hard blow all the same for Newcastle, with the injury of the hero of the match against PSG. Visibly injured in the left shoulder, Pope had to give way to Dubravka. The goalkeeper could be absent for several days, or even several weeks. Whatever the case, this success of Toons allows them to move ahead of Manchester United to find themselves fifth, two places and two points ahead of Red Devils. Newcastle now remain on a run of three straight victories over United in 2023, in all competitions. Unheard of since the 1920s!
