Former FC Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué is convinced that the establishment of the Superleague will greatly benefit the big leagues of La Liga.
Gerard Pique has a lot of concern about the financial health of Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. But, he has a solution to redress the situation and bring these two Iberian teams back to where they should be.
Barça and Real in danger
The owner of FC Andorra believes that the two giants are falling behind their biggest European rivals economically. And he sees no other salvation than the establishment of a European superleague.
“Barça is pulling the levers, Madrid is also going into debt… But there will be a moment, in three, five, seven years, when the club will no longer be able to pay the interest on the debt. And you will be obliged to transform Barça into a Sports Limited Company. For Madrid it may take a little longer because they are a little better off economically, but if they want to continue to be competitive in Europe they have no choice either. Unless there is a Super League first, and Financial Fair Play is regulated”confided the former Spanish footballer.
La Liga is one of the most followed championships in the world. But, for Piqué, his rank prestige is not enough to maintain his best representatives at the highest level. “If you only compete in your national competition, it doesn’t matter because you set it the way you want and we all play by the same rules. But when you play an international competition, namely the Champions League, and the teams are not subject to the same rules, that’s where the imbalance occurs that keeps Barça and Madrid at the top.
