Quiet winner of Maccabi Haifa this Thursday, Stade Rennais is at least qualified for the Europa League play-off.

In bad shape in the championship, the Rennais Stadium perfectly launched the era Julien Stéphan by winning against Reims (3-1) on Sunday, allowing the Rennais to give themselves a little breathing space in Ligue 1 after five matches without success.

A victory to follow

In Europe, things were going rather well for the players trained until then by Bruno Génésio, leaders of their group with three victories and one defeat. This Thursday, the Bretons had the opportunity to secure their place by winning on the lawn of the Maccabi Haifa without worrying about the result between Villarreal and Panathinaikos.

Very quickly, Stéphan’s men showed themselves to be the most enterprising and finally found the fault half an hour into the game. Martin Terrier who opens the scoring after a nice one-two with Enzo Le Fée (0-1, 30th). Rennes number 7 scores his first goal in 11 months after his cruciate ligament rupture.

After a perfectly controlled first half, SRFC hit the nail on the head as soon as they returned from the locker room. This time it is Amine Gouiri who took advantage of an error by the Maccabi defense to double the lead. (0-2, 47th) At the end of stoppage time, Fabian Rieder sealed the victory for his team with a superb free kick, concluding a perfect evening.

At the end of a match dominated from start to finish, Rennes won and had two consecutive successes for the first time this season and ensured that they were – at least – a play-off for the knockout stages of the Europa League. They will just have to not lose against Villarreal on December 14 to qualify directly for the round of 16.
