A video filmed by a spectator shows Angel Di Maria spitting in the direction of Brazilian supporters during the heated match between the two countries at the Maracana.

Things definitely happened on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, during this electric meeting between Brazil and Argentina at the Maracana. We saw the Brazilian police attack Argentine supporters, and several Albiceleste players tried to climb into the stands to intervene. We also saw Lionel Messi and Rodrygo exchanging a few unkind words on the pitch.

Another video, which circulated this Thursday, shows a tense scene between several Argentine players and Brazilian supporters. Insults come down from the stands, and there is even liquid thrown in the direction of the world champions. In response, the Argentinians say a few sweet words in turn. And we even see Angel Di Maria spitting towards the aisles, without hitting anyone.

The Argentine press sees this gesture as a response to an attack coming from the stands, while this spitting goes down much less well on the Brazilian side. This match was undoubtedly Angel Di Maria’s last in Brazil, as the former Paris Saint-Germain player announced that he would retire from international football after the next Copa America.
