Man Utd squad to do a big clean-up in 2024, with ten players heading for the exit
Manchester United are preparing to do a major clean-up of their squad during the next two transfer windows, with TEN players reportedly on the hot seat for Erik ten Hag.
The club are looking to bounce back from a disappointing start to the season, where the Ten Hag side are sixth in the Premier League and bottom of their Champions League group.
The Red Devils are anticipating the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe in the coming weeks as a minority investor, with the billionaire expected to buy 25% of the club from the Glazer family for a price believed to be around £1.4 billion.
According to Manchester Evening News, Ratcliffe will be given control of United’s sporting operations, allowing the club to shed a large part of its squad.
United saw 14 players leave the club over the summer, after seeking to cut costs to comply with the Premier League’s Financial Fair Play rules.
Ten Hag are keen to sign a centre-back in the coming months, which could result in one of United’s first-team defenders leaving in order to find funds and make room for new arrivals.
Tom Heaton and Jonny Evans are out of contract at the end of the season, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Anthony Martial and Hannibal Mejbri also have contracts which expire at the end of the season, although United have the possibility of extending them for an additional year.
Harry Maguire was tipped to leave United this summer but has regained his place in the first team, jeopardizing the future of Raphaël Varane, whose form and fitness are declining, amid speculation he will be linked at a departure.
The club are also expecting midfield renewal, with Scott McTominay still doubtful despite his good form this season, while Sofyan Amrabat’s chances of turning his loan move into a permanent move appear to be dwindling after his difficult England debut .
Donny van de Beek and Jadon Sancho are available for transfer, with both players unlikely to play for Ten Hag barring a dramatic turnaround. Fringe options such as Brandon Williams, Alvaro Fernandez and Shola Shoretire are also likely to leave when their contracts expire next summer.
