Eric Di Méco, former OM player, spoke out in favor of the selection of an Olympian for Euro 2026.

A few months ago, there were four Marseille players in Didier Deschamps’ France group. Now this is no longer the case. In the last list, there was only one representative of the Marseille team, in this case Jonathan Clauss.

Di Méco wants to see Clauss at the Euro

Clauss did quite well in the match he played against Gibraltar, scoring a goal in the process. He is starting to earn his place in the right corridor of France. And some are pushing hard for it to be present in Germany. This is particularly the case for Eric Di Méco.

Ex-French international, Di Méco judges that DD would now be wrong to do without the former Lens player: “I don’t know if he has won his starting place, but I think he will be at the Euro. In the sense that we are quite poor in this position in France. Even if among the young people there are some who are good, he is ahead. Offensively, he is very interesting”

“In close matches, Deschamps will put a central defender on the right”

Di Méco still brandished a caveat regarding Clauss: “Against Gibraltar, there was no adversity. But against Greece, in an away match and even if it was an second team, he is in difficulty with certain actions. I’m still afraid that in close matches, DD will be tempted to put a central defender in this position.

As a reminder, Eric Di Méco himself played in a European Championship with France. It was that of 1996 in England. And it was his only international competition played with the Blues.
