Robert Lewandowski would have had a different trajectory if the Icelandic volcano had not erupted in 2010.

Sometimes fate plays funny tricks on you. This is the case for Robert Lewandowski who could have had a different career if a volcano had not erupted 2,500 kilometers from his home. In 2010, the Pole left to join England, but the eruption of the Icelandic volcano changed his plans.

“I had the opportunity to join Blackburn Rovers… but I wanted to see what Blackburn was like, the training ground, says Lewandowski. I met Sam Allardyce for the first time. It was in Poland after a match. I thought he was a good guy, a very good coach. And Allardyce was ready to bring in a young player he thought was something new. He wanted to come to Poland to see me. »

“There were many offers to think about when I left Poznan, continues the Polish international. I think it would have been good if I had gone to Blackburn…I couldn’t go because of the cloud. It was the volcano. For a week, no one could fly to Europe. The flight was booked, but we couldn’t leave. This fact changed my life. If I had gone to Blackburn, I might have stayed there…”

Instead, Lewandowski joined Jürgen Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund, where his career truly took off. Would he have been as successful afterwards if he had gone to Blackburn, who were in the Premier League at the time? We might think so, given his talent and his propensity to score goals in any jersey. But this shows that destiny sometimes depends on a few things…
