Raphael Varane and Erik ten Hag are not on bad terms, with the World Cup winner keen to regain his place in the Man Utd team, according to The Athletic.
THE Daily Telegraph reported that there was a “strained relationship” between Varane and Ten Hag after the Dutchman dropped the centre-back.
Varane has not started any of Man Utd’s last four matches and the Frenchman has lost his starting place.
Ten Hag dismissed reports of a falling out: ” Absolutely not. As I said, it is for tactical reasons that I chose these partnerships. I think Harry (Maguire) and Jonny (Evans) did well,” Ten Hag said.
“As I said last year, Harry (Maguire) didn’t play much and so I was very happy with Rapha (Varane)’s performance. I have always been satisfied with its performance. But at the moment Harry is playing very well and there is internal competition.”
According to The Athleticc, Varane considers that Ten Hag’s decision to replace him with Maguire is only a question of tactics.
Ten Hag seemed to suggest that Varane and Maguire were not an ideal duo.
“ There are moments in some matches where they (Maguire and Varane) can play together and they have already proven that they can do it” , did he declare.
“But the construction is not as fluid when one of them plays as a left central defender”Ten Hag explained again.
This suggests that Ten Hag will choose either Maguire or Varane, not both.
The Athletic reports that Varane is confident he can regain his starting job, with Maguire a good example to follow after the England defender lured Ten Hag after months on the bench.
