Olympique de Marseille will finish far, very far from the Ligue 1 podium this season. This is Daniel Riolo’s analysis.

Olympique de Marseille is struggling this season in the league. Only ninth in the Ligue 1 standings after eleven days, the Marseille club is struggling to be sharp and today finds itself seven points from the play-off place for the next Champions League. In the midst of some turbulence linked in particular to the failure in qualifying for the C1 against Panathinaikos, the hasty departure of coach Marcelino, or even to this famous meeting on September 18 between management and representatives of supporter groups, OM does not seem to be on the best path. In any case, this is the analysis made by some.

And first and foremost by Daniel Riolo, who took stock Monday evening on the air of RMC. The journalist first talked about the start of the season and the various events surrounding OM. “ I waited, but now, at the beginning of November, it’s hard not to see that it’s a terrible failure. It started badly with this failure in the preliminary round and behind there was no reaction. There was this crisis which saw a coach leave who had obviously never arrived. And little by little, you obviously have to give the product a chance, you say let’s wait, wait, wait. We are eleven games in and there is no improvement. Not much happens when you watch OM.

“Once thirteenths, once tenths”

To the observer, even the positive actually becomes negative. : “ There is a positive element which is worrying, and it is paradoxical, it is that the state of mind is good, the team is playing and giving its all. There is no such thing as a guy who cheats. They’re really into the guys. » As for the rest of the season, things should not improve, judging by the statistics unearthed by Daniel Riolo, over the last fifteen years. “ They are ninth, ten points behind Monaco. They have thirteen points. I watched all the previous seasons up to the title year (2010). They’ve only done worse twice. (…) The two exceptions are 2015-2016, they are fourteenth with twelve points, that is to say only one point less than currently. And in 2011-2012, OM are twelfth with twelve points.

And to conclude, in the form of a negative prediction for the Marseillais: “ Obviously, we had to look at what position they finished in those two years. Well, once thirteenths, once tenths. So that means we have to wait for a spectacular recovery. » Nothing impossible. But will Marseille succeed?
