It will not have made an impression. After five short championship matches at the head of OM, Marcelino Garcia Toral chose to leave Marseille on September 20. A surprise departure precipitated by the incidents which took place between certain groups of supporters and President Pablo Longoria, close friend of the Iberian tactician. Marcelino therefore left his position as a sign of solidarity with the Marseille boss.

“These groups entered the president’s office, a dialogue was planned and what happened was a threat and an obligation on the part of the leader of these ultras to leave the club. I had no problems when I arrived the next day. When he told me he was leaving, I didn’t do anything. It was an unprecedented situation. I don’t feel betrayed by Pablo, he gave me explanations, I consider him a friend and when a person makes a decision and then changes it, I’m sure there is a reason for that.”, he confided recently. It must be said that at the time of his departure, his team had not really convinced the supporters, who therefore did not really mourn his departure.

A return

And after a month and a half of inactivity, the 58-year-old Spaniard is already on the way to finding work. As indicated by several Spanish media such as Relevo, Villarreal is seriously considering putting an end to Pacheta’s adventure on his bench. Arriving at the beginning of September to take over from Quique Setién, he obtained poor results, with four wins, three draws and four defeats in all competitions. The Yellow Submarine is thus in a sad thirteenth place in the La Liga rankings, far from its usual objectives.

And the club management is already thinking about bringing Marcelino back. He is the club’s first option, and the main concerned recently turned down approaches from Sevilla and Almeria because he was waiting for Villarreal. The club’s goal was to have him sign a contract next summer, and that’s why Pacheta received a short-term contract. For the moment, there has not yet been an official offer, but the club has already prepared a two-year contract with an optional third. The two parties seem doomed to get along. As a reminder, Marcelino had already coached Villarreal between 2013 and 2016 and brought the club from D2 to La Liga, also leading the club to the Europa League semi-finals and qualifying it for the Champions League.
