Lionel Messi won his eighth Ballon d’Or, but his vote for the Kopa Trophy raised some questions.

Messi won the trophy after leading Argentina to victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with a change in the voting criteria now focusing on the previous season, instead of the calendar year.

In addition to the journalists selected by France Football, national team coaches and captains are also allowed to vote, with Messi finishing well ahead of second-placed Erling Haaland.

The Kopa Trophy, which rewards the best selected player under the age of 21, is chosen exclusively by a list of former Ballon d’Or winners, including Messi.

Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham has lifted the 2023 trophy thanks to his sensational 12 months at club and national team, as part of a superb start to life in Madrid.

However, despite Bellingham winning the award by a clear margin, the England international was chosen third by Messi.

FC Barcelona star Pedri was Messi’s second choice, while Bayern Munich striker Jamal Musiala was chosen for the top spot in the voting.

In the final ranking, Musiala finished second and Pedri, winner of the 2021 edition, third.
