Saudi Arabia’s winning of the 2034 World Cup, already announced by Gianni Infantino, is getting people talking. The boss of the all-powerful FIFA is once again drawing criticism.
Gianni Infantino is definitely having a hard time increasing his popularity. Even if this is perhaps the least of his worries, the president of the International Football Federation (FIFA) has found himself in the sights of criticism since Tuesday evening. This time, it is the more than likely (but not yet official) obtaining of the 2034 World Cup by Saudi Arabia that is causing the talk. The leader confirmed that the Saudi kingdom would be in charge of the organization, due to a lack of competitors. The overall scenario and the conclusion announced by Gianni Infantino in any case provoke reactions.
Some journalists thus protested against the decision taken by FIFA and its boss. Mixing irony and annoyance, the journalist Thimothée Maymon, for example, shared his strong opinion regarding Gianni Infantino. “ Great surprise. To the extent that Gianni Infantino knows very well that in the regulations it is stated that a continent which has received the World Cup cannot receive it a second consecutive time. Given that he added South America in addition to Africa and Europe, what a surprise! It falls in Asia, and therefore in Saudi Arabia. He doesn’t care about us, and he doesn’t care about us until then.“
Ever denser schedule
And if the World Cup should not escape Saudi Arabia, it is in particular because FIFA has decided to organize three matches of the 2030 World Cup in South America to celebrate the centenary of the competition, the first edition of which took place in Uruguay. The 2030 World Cup will also be organized by Spain, Morocco and Portugal. The last continent still eligible was Asia after Australia’s withdrawal.

To add to the annoyance, the Saudi World Cup could, as in 2022 with Qatar, take place in winter. A point of tension which has already caused the president of the UNFP to react in the columns of The Team. The leader of the French footballers’ union declared: disgusted by the system“. It remains to be seen how long the main players will accept the ever more improbable and overloaded schedules imposed on them.
