At the end of the 9th day of the Bundesliga, Bayer Leverkusen hosted SC Friborg this Sunday at the BayArena. Under the threat of Bayern Munich, in demonstration against Darmstadt the day before (8-0), the team led by Xabi Alonso was obliged to win against its counterpart from Brisgau to retain its leadership position. Opposite, Christian Streich’s flock hoped to play a trick on their opponents to follow up with a second success in a row in the championship. But very quickly, Matthias Ginter’s partners cowered in front of their surface to try to contain the opposing waves. At the end of a solo number, Florian Wirtz logically rewarded a first period dominated head and shoulders by his partners. At the end of a series of swaying dribbles, the number 10 of the B04 got out of the marking of the Friborg defenders and placed an unstoppable strike for Noah Atubolu (1-0, 37th).

Still led by the twirling Florian Wirtz after returning from the locker room, the B04 passed the second on the hour mark. On a delivery from the German winger, Jonas Hoffmann tried his luck outside the area, or the strike from the former M’Gladbach playmaker hit the left post. Unhappy, the doorkeeper Breisgau-Brasilianer propelled the leather against his will into his own cages (2-0, 60th). Less than ten minutes later, Friborg got its head above water thanks to Manuel Gulde. Having come into play earlier, the SCF defender reduced the score with a helmet strike on a well-taken corner from Vincenzo Griffo (2-1, 69th). Jostled, the Werkself were nevertheless content to preserve their advantage on the scoreboard. With this eighth consecutive victory, Bayer consolidates its leadership at the top of the ranking while SC Friborg falls behind in the race for Europe.
