Sandro Tonali (23 years old) knew he was risking big. Involved in an illicit sports betting affair with other young transalpine players, the midfielder sold to Newcastle this summer admitted to having bet on AC Milan matches while he was still playing for Rossoneri. The noose quickly tightened and the player had to collaborate with the Italian federation (FIGC).
And the latest trends mentioned in the local press have been confirmed. Tonali received a ten-month suspension to which were added eight alternative sentences, compliance with anti-ludopathy treatment and availability for 16 face-to-face meetings organized by the Italian Football Federation. This agreement between Tonali and the federal prosecutor’s office was announced by FIGC president Gabriele Gravina.
No Euro either for Tonali
It should be added that this agreement must now be approved by the General Sports Prosecutor’s Office of CONI (Italian Olympic Committee, editor’s note) before being transmitted to UEFA for the international extension of the measure, which will prevent it to play with Newcastle and which will therefore formalize the end of the player’s season. Indeed, in addition to being deprived of matches with the Magpies, Sandro Tonali is certain to miss Euro 2024 if Italy manages to qualify.
“An agreement has already been reached between the federal prosecutor’s office and Sandro Tonali, which took place before the referral, so it must be endorsed by me, which I have already done. A plea bargain is planned for 18 months including 8 months of rehabilitation activities, some therapeutic activities and at least 16 face-to-face meetings as testimony.Gravina confirmed to Italian media.
