After the international break, the Premier League made its comeback this Saturday and it started with Liverpool’s great victory over Everton (2-0) in the Mersey derby. And with the Reds at the top of the provisional standings, Manchester City had no other choice than to win against Brighton in a meeting which promised to be very pleasant between the football of Guardiola and that of De Zerbi. In this 4 p.m. multiplex, Erling Haaland was obviously there as was Julian Alvarez and Jeremy Doku.
The Belgian, who arrived this summer for 60 million euros, showed why the Cityzens had decided to bet on him. Still starting on the left lane, he caused misery to James Milner who was overwhelmed by the speed of his opponent. After one of his many excesses, he opened the scoring to Alvarez (7th). A little later, Erling Haaland, inevitably, punished the Seagulls with a powerful strike (2-0, 19th). The reduction of the score signed by Ansu Fati after a good service from Mitoma changed nothing (2-1 final score). Manchester City regains the lead in the Championship while awaiting the Tottenham match this Sunday.
Newcastle confirm
In the other match, Newcastle, who lost to PSG in the Champions League a few weeks ago, hosted Crystal Palace. And as against the Parisian team, the Mapgpies played their offensive football with a big victory (4-0). The hosts were already leading 3-0 at the break thanks to goals from Murphy, Gordon and Longstaff. And this was confirmed upon returning from the locker room. With this victory, Newcastle confirms its current good form and climbs to 5th place in the Premier League.
In the last three matches of this 4 p.m. multi, Brentford pushed Vincent Kompany’s Burnley a little further into crisis. Thanks to three goals from Mbeumo, Wissa and Ghoddos (3-0 victory), Brentford is now in 14th place while Burnley concedes its 7th defeat of the season and is 19th. Same story for Bournemouth who also lost at home against Wolverhampton (1-2). The newly promoted Luton Town managed to grab a draw against Nottingham Forest in stoppage time (2-2). Enough to take a precious point in the race to maintain.
The results from 4 p.m.:
- Manchester City 2-1 Brighton (Alvarez, Haaland / Fati)
- Brentford 3-0 Burnley (Mbeumo, Wissa, Ghoddos)
- Newcastle 4-0 Crystal Palace (Murphy, Gordan, Longstaff, Wilson)
- Bournemouth 1-2 Wolverhampton (Solanke / Cunha, Kalajdzic)
- Nottingham Forest 2-2 Luton Town (Wood x2 / Ogbene, Adebayo)
