Following the forced kiss scandal against player Jenni Hermoso following Spain’s coronation in the Women’s World Cup final on August 20 in Sydney, Luis Rubiales was forced to resign from his post as president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), last September. From then on, Pedro Rocha, who until now held the position of vice-president, was propelled to interim head of the RFEF. But as new elections for the presidency loom on the horizon, several names are emerging to succeed him.
According to the indiscretions of Marca, former referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz is in pole position to take over the reins of the RFEF. According to the Spanish media, the ex-official of 46 who retired internationally last June would embody a break with his predecessor insofar as he is foreign to the recent affairs which have agitated the RFEF. In addition, he is seen as a credible option with a view to carrying out a total overhaul of the institution given his high-level experience.
